Historic wage decision

By ACWA | 01-Dec-2012 Today Ms. Lynda Ford, CEO Australian Community Workers Association again congratulated the Gillard Government for its foresight in supporting the historic Fair Work Australia (FWA) wage decision. ‘Today’ she said‘ over 150,000 of our constituents will be financially better off than they were a week ago.  From December 1 the benefits from the decision should start flowing into the pay packets of our incredibly hard working and under paid community services workers. The wage increase has not come a moment too soon and it is gratifying to see that the difficult and challenging work of some of our members is finally being acknowledged through better pay’.

The wage increase affects workers who are employed under the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010 (SACS Modern Award). Workers can find out if they are covered by the wage decision and eligible for a salary increase by visiting the Fair Work Australia website.

In introducing the Fair Work Act, the Australian Government provided a new broader test for equal pay that is based on equal or comparable work. FWA’s ruling earlier this year was significant in the advancement of equal pay for women. Around 120,000 of the workers covered by the order are women.

Ms. Ford said ‘it is only a small inroad into dealing with the remuneration and recognition of the professionalism of community workers, but it is one we welcome. Over the next decade the demand for workers within this sector will increase enormously with the ageing of the population and today’s milestone pay rise goes some way towards ensuring that those positions will be filled'.

A win for Australia's community workers

Australian Community Workers Association CEO Ms Lynda Ford congratulates Fair Work Australia on its decision to redress the pay inequality of the many thousands of, mainly female, workers in the social and community services sector. A pay increase for the 150,000 workers of between 19% and 41% will be phased in over eight years, starting from 1 December 2012. 

Ms. Ford went on to say however, ‘that workers in the sector have been significantly disadvantaged over a very long period of time and will continue to be so until the end of the decade. By then many of the workers who have borne the financial weight of this economic injustice will be retired and not receive any real benefit from this decision’. 

Ms. Ford also congratulated the Australian Services Union for bringing the test case to Fair Work Australia and the Prime Minister Ms. Julia Gillard for her public support of the campaign. 

Ms. Ford commented that the decision is good for all workers in the sector and she wholeheartedly supports the sentiment expressed by Lisa Darmanin, assistant secretary of the ASU, who said women would now get a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work

ACWA WELCOMES NEW COMMISSIONER

By ACWA | 13-Sep-2012 The Australian Community Workers Association (ACWA) congratulates the Gillard Government on its appointment of Ms. Susan Pascoe AM, as the inaugural Australian Charities and Not-for-Profit Commissioner. Today the Assistant Treasurer, the Hon. David Bradbury MP and the Minister for Social Inclusion, the Hon. Mark Butler MP jointly nominated Ms. Pascoe for the position. 

ACWA CEO, Ms. Lynda Ford, said ‘many of the 500,000 community workers that ACWA represents are employed in community organisations and are vitally interested in sector reform’. 

 Ms. Ford went on to say ‘ACWA warmly congratulates Ms. Pascoe, who in her role as Interim Commissioner for the ACNC worked tirelessly to build a strong and positive working relationship with the sector, and we look forward to cooperating with the Commission as it continues in its work of establishing an independent and effective regulator’
