Successful restoration / reunification of children to their families – essential practices

Details

This is an ACWA endorsed CPD program offered by Eleonora De Michele Consultancy.

The Out-of-Home Care sector is undergoing a rapid and profound change since evidence and research findings and legislative changes have promoted the safe
return of children to their families and communities. Agencies whose usual business is the provision of foster care services are now required to undertake
restoration work with birth families. As this is a very new piece of work for the sector, anxiety about how to do the work is patent. This workshop will commence the
development and enhancement of restoration practices within the sector.

This two day workshop invites direct service providers, their supervisors and agency managers to explore the most current research, evidence and practices into
what works in providing restoration services. The three key areas to be explored are:
  1. Partnering in parenting: building relationships between foster carers and birth parents to promote restoration
  2. Making family time meaningful: opportunities to demonstrate parenting capacity
  3. Preparing children and young people for restoration
Participants will also be provided with opportunities to practice, through the use of their own cases or case studies, developing ideas and plans on how to:
  1. Forge respectful developmental helping relationships between foster carers and birth families
  2. Use practice tools that builds confidence in the carer – birth family work
  3. Maximise opportunities for birth parents to demonstrate safe parenting capacities
  4. Help children and young people understand and participate in the restoration / reunification process and develop plans to help repair the parent – child relationship
