Engaging families using strength-based solution focused questions in child protection intervention

Details

This is an ACWA endorsed CPD program offered by Eleonora De Michele Consultancy.

Research has shown that one of the greatest predictors of positive outcomes for families in child protection intervention is the quality of the relationships between the family and the practitioners in their professional network. Positive relationships also require practitioners to lean into challenging and respectful conversations with families to bring about change and build safety for the family. The approach practitioners take in engaging with and building this relationship with families is vitally important.

This highly interactive, practice focused 2-day course provides practitioners and their supervisors with an opportunity to reflect what they, as practitioners, bring to conversations with families and how to best manage their impact to promote positive relationship. The course also introduces strength-based, solution focused questioning approaches when working with families in the early intervention and child protection space. A key component of this work is assisting families to surface intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to bring about lasting change.

The questions professionals ask families are an intervention in themselves and with these questions practitioners can help family to think creatively about how to progress towards their goals of safety for their themselves and their children.

By the end of this workshop, practitioners will:
  • Increase their confidence in having difficult conversations with families, by managing themselves and focusing on future safety.
  • Develop their knowledge and skills in family engagement and to practice the micro-skills used in intentional conversations and building a helping relationship.
  • Develop an understanding and have opportunity to practice strength-based solution focused questions.
  • Develop an action plan for future professional development
Questions the workshop will answer includes:
  • What do I bring to challenging conversations and what are my strengths and area of development?
  • What questions can I ask when the family feels stuck in the past?
  • How can I tap inot the family’s own motivatons and strengths and resources?
