Suicide at Work – Managing incidents and supporting staff

Suicide at Work is a training program to assist you to manage incidents and support staff who may be traumatised by a suicide.

Over 2,800 Australians die by suicide each year, the majority of whom were employed at the time. This is a shocking statistic, but additionally research shows that 100+ people are exposed to or impacted by each death.

Businesses can be impacted by suicide in various ways causing a ripple effect across a team or entire workforce, and in some situations their customers. For example, an employee witnessing a suicide, discovering a body, being traumatized by the details from a service user, or the death of a work colleague or loved one.

Few managers, human resource, workplace health and safety or employee assistance program staff are aware of how to manage these types of incidents. This training not only raises their awareness but assists them to be prepared in advance with a suicide postvention action plan.

This training is unique, based on evidence and best practice, and in line with the 5th Australian Government National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Plan and national suicide prevention principles.

Learning outcomes include:
  • Awareness of the diverse range of issues to consider and strategies to manage them
  • An understanding of the breadth of staff and people who may be exposed and the impact on them
  • A draft Postvention (Critical Incident) plan of immediate, short and long-term actions
Participants will receive training notes, several templates and a list of referral services for their use.
